30s

How it works

Typing Speed Test measures how fast and accurately you can type. Choose a time limit (15s, 30s, 60s, or 120s) and difficulty level, then start typing. The timer begins on your first keypress.

As you type, correctly typed characters appear in the default text color while errors are highlighted in red with an underline. A blinking cursor shows your current position. Press space to move to the next word.

When time expires, you see your results: WPM (calculated as correct characters divided by 5, divided by elapsed minutes), accuracy percentage, character breakdown, and a ranking from Beginner to Elite.

FAQ

How is WPM calculated?
WPM (words per minute) is calculated using the standard method: one 'word' equals 5 characters. The formula is (total correct characters / 5) / (elapsed time in minutes). This standardized approach allows fair comparison regardless of actual word lengths.
What is a good typing speed?
The average typing speed is around 40 WPM. 50-70 WPM is considered good for general office work. Professional typists typically reach 70-90 WPM. Speeds above 90 WPM are considered professional, and above 120 WPM is elite. The world record is over 200 WPM.
How can I improve my typing speed?
Practice consistently with proper technique: use all ten fingers, maintain correct hand positioning on the home row (ASDF JKL;), avoid looking at the keyboard, and focus on accuracy before speed. Speed naturally increases as muscle memory develops. Daily 15-minute practice sessions are more effective than occasional long sessions.
What is the difference between touch typing and hunt-and-peck?
Touch typing uses all ten fingers with each finger assigned to specific keys, without looking at the keyboard. Hunt-and-peck uses one or two fingers and requires looking at the keyboard to find each key. Touch typists are significantly faster and more accurate because they rely on muscle memory.
What is the average typing speed by profession?
Administrative assistants typically type 55-70 WPM. Programmers average 50-70 WPM (code involves more thinking than typing). Data entry specialists reach 60-80 WPM. Court reporters and transcriptionists type 80-120+ WPM. Writers vary widely from 40-80 WPM.
Does typing speed really matter?
For most knowledge workers, accuracy matters more than raw speed. However, faster typing reduces the friction between thinking and executing, which improves flow state and productivity. Even going from 40 to 60 WPM saves significant time over a career of daily typing.
