Password Generator
Generate strong, random passwords and memorable passphrases. Cryptographically secure, runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to any server.
Password Generator
Generate strong, random passwords and passphrases.
How it works
This generator uses the Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues) to produce cryptographically secure random numbers. These numbers are mapped to characters from your selected character sets.
Random mode picks characters from a pool of up to 90 characters (uppercase, lowercase, digits, symbols). Each additional character type increases the pool size, making shorter passwords stronger.
Passphrase mode picks random words from a curated 100-word list. Four words give ~26 bits of entropy per word (about 104 bits total) — comparable to a 16-character random password but much easier to remember.
The strength meter shows entropy in bits. Under 40 bits is weak, 60+ is good, 80+ is strong, and 128+ is virtually unbreakable with current technology.
FAQ
- How does the password generator work?
- It uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) to produce truly random characters. No passwords are sent to any server — everything runs locally in your browser.
- How long should my password be?
- At least 12 characters for most accounts, 16+ for high-security accounts like banking or email. Longer passwords are exponentially harder to crack — a 16-character password with mixed characters would take billions of years to brute-force.
- What is a passphrase and why use one?
- A passphrase is a password made of random words (like "ridge-flame-lunar-quest"). Passphrases are easier to remember than random characters but can be equally strong. A 4-word passphrase has about 65 bits of entropy — comparable to a 10-character random password.
- What does "entropy" mean for passwords?
- Entropy measures how unpredictable a password is, in bits. Higher entropy = harder to crack. 40 bits is the minimum for basic security, 80+ bits is strong, and 128+ bits is virtually unbreakable. Entropy depends on both length and the size of the character pool.
- Should I include special characters?
- Yes, when the service allows it. Special characters dramatically increase the character pool (from 62 to 90+), which means shorter passwords can achieve the same entropy. However, a longer password with just letters and numbers can be equally strong.
- Is this password generator safe to use?
- Yes. Passwords are generated entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API — the same cryptographic foundation used by password managers. No data is transmitted, stored, or logged. You can verify this by disconnecting from the internet and generating passwords.
